The Palms National Park Located 38 km north of Crows Nest and 48 km south of Nanango 8 km from the New England Highway south of Cooyar is the Palms National Park, a small 12 ha park with a small remnant of Piccabeen palms surrounded by a belt of subtropical rainforest with a number of huge Moreton Bay figtrees.
It is a quite magical vine forest in a spring-fed gully where birds, frogs, bats and other wildlife can be seen and heard on an impressive rainforest boardwalk through the Piccabean palms. Maidenwell Maidenwell is located 28 km from Nanango on the Tarong Road. The town's main attraction is the Coomba Falls with their deep, very cold, natural swimming hole. They are located 2 km from town via a road which runs next to the Maidenwell General Store and reaches a car park above the falls.
There is a new stairway down to the swimming hole where the waterfall cascades over volcanic rocks. Taromeo was square miles square kilometres and was taken up by Simon Scott who used it to raise sheep. Nanango was the smallest property. It covered square miles square kilometres. It became a popular meeting place for people working on the three large properties.
Today it is still possible to visit the store which has been turned into a museum and the nearby private cemetery which is enclosed by stone walls. Thus Nanango came into existence around Goode's Inn. It has been described as Queensland's fourth oldest town. Goode's Inn was a resting place for the local labourers and shearers. The district's population rose as miners, many of whom were Chinese, arrived to try their luck. This was part of a closer settlement pattern of the district.

Nanango's population was by then people, at which it largely plateaued for the next 65 years. In the s the Queensland government was forming plans for large-scale electricity generation. Proximate coal deposits and the availability of water coolant from the Burnett headwaters both south of Nanango made the town an attractive location for a new power station. In the Tarong coal-fired power station was opened , after a six year construction period.
Nanango's population doubled between and , its civic infrastructure also being enlarged or refurbished, as instanced by the new high school opened in The only significant setback was the closure of the railway line in , a typical development in regional Queensland's post-war years as road transport superseded the rail network.
Somewhat slower coming was the closure of the dairy factory in , ending a slow decline dating from the early s. Nanango has a substantial shopping area with trades and local businesses.
It has a range of sporting facilities, including a golf course and a racecourse eight meetings a year , State and Catholic primary schools, a high school, an agricultural show society , a hospital, four churches and the former Nanango Shire offices.
