Will, fear, rage, avarice, love, compassion, hope; these are the emotions that rule over the Emotional Spectrum in the DC Universe that the Green Lantern Corps call home.
Each emotion is championed by a different Corps that uses their ability to wield their respective light for good or evil.
But with all of the other Corps either helping or hindering the universe at large, who exactly are these White Lanterns? And where do they fit on the inexplicably long timeline of the space cops known as the Green Lanterns and their constant battle against evil? The inception of the White Lanterns came about during one of the darkest times in the history of the DC Universe, when the cosmos-spanning zombie brawl that was the saga of the Blackest Night descended upon heroes and villains alike.
With DC's heroes under attack from the Lord of the Unliving and commander of the Black Lantern Corps, Nekron, as he sought to annihilate all life in the universe, the arrival of the White Lanterns could not have come at a more dire moment. Having suffered setback after brutal setback as the swarming army of the dead stifled the heroes' attempts at taking Nekron down, the skeletal villain is eventually able to hone in on his true nefarious purpose of destroying all life by viciously murdering a Guardian of the Universe and using their insides to form a connection to the Life Entity, or the literal embodiment of the power of creation.
With the entity awakened, Green Lantern Hal Jordan realizes that like the similar entities that embody the other emotions on the spectrum, this one needed a host to unlock its full strength. Being the selfish yet ultimately reliable guy that he is, Sinestro Corps leader and usual villain, Sinestro, immediately plunges himself into the entity to bond with it and give the remaining forces of good a fighting chance. When he emerges, Sinestro is clad in a uniform of pure white and equipped with the very first power ring of life.
Unfortunately, Nekron almost immediately rips the entity from Sinestro, depowering him and temporarily shattering the morale of the heroes still fighting across the Earth.
DC's Yellow Lanterns Explained. Currently, only Deadman possess a White Power Ring , but all momentarily inducted White Lanterns are still considered members, as the White Light still has some degree of control over them.
Deadman learns from the Entity that it is dying and needs to find the "chosen one" to take his place which is Deadman's task. He thought of Hal Jordan as the perfect candidate and as he told the Entity to take him to him.
Aquaman explains what the White Lantern told him, to find Jackson Hyde. Deadman questions why the Lantern took him to Aquaman when he could be searching for the Entity's replacement.
The ring replies that to find the new Entity, Deadman must help all the other resurrected complete their tasks. Aquaman understands what's at hand and explains to Deadman that for him to succeed he must find and help others and tell them what has to happen. The White Lantern was recently acquired by Deathstorm the Black Lantern version of Firestorm who by infecting it with his essence was able to generate Black Lantern duplicates of the twelve heroes and villains resurrected by the Entity apparently with the goal of preventing them from achieving their missions.
When the Entity wanted them to live separate lives as a secondary labor so that they can live life stronger, Hawkman and Hawkgirl objected to that as Hawkman tries to remove the White Power Ring from Deadman by force. The Entity quoted "So be it" and reduces them to white dust right in front of Deadman's eyes. Deadman orders the ring to resurrect the two heroes, but the ring refuses saying to Boston that this is part of his plan. Wielders of the White Lantern ring were able to tap into all of the powers of the Emotional Spectrum.
They could use the mind control abilities of the Star Sapphires, the power enhancement of the Blue Lanterns, the teleportation of the Indigo Tribe, and the burning plasma of the Red Lanterns, as well as being able to create energy constructs. Besides these powers, the ring also allowed its bearer to resurrect the dead, restore life to barren landscapes, and heal near instantly from even the most life threatening wounds.
It's easily the most powerful ring of them all. According to the Guardians of Universe, life originated on Oa, but it would be revealed that this was a lie. This meant that life had originated on Earth and the Guardians had been lying about it all these years. The Earth was so important to the power of the White Lantern, the Entity would charge its first Corps with saving the elemental powers of the planet from darkness in order to save the world of its origin.
