A significant part of the basin is made up of features in the western and eastern regions of Tuva, Sayan, the Hentiyn and Hangyan mountains, and Sayan. These areas have elevations ranging from 2, to 7, feet, as well as extensive bowls between mountain ranges and steep valleys. In the Sayans and in the southern area of Tuva, there are even higher peaks, such as Mount Munku-Sardyk, which has a height of about 11, feet.

The Yenisey River flows through regions which are relatively stable politically, and danger from humans is not high. Inhabitants along the river are generally friendly and welcoming. The river is free of ice from about May to early October. The Yenisey flows from about 47 degrees latitude to above 70 and therefore the climate changes considerably along its length.

After the conjunction of the Yenisey and Angara near Yeniseisk, the Yenisey becomes broader and slower as it crosses the Siberian plains.
